Fouquet’s Paris Joins France’s Palace Distinction

Hôtel Barrière Fouquet’s Paris has been awarded France’s Palace distinction, the state-recognised tier that sits above the five-star rating, becoming the first hotel on the Champs-Élysées to enter the circle. It was one of six hotels added to the list on 2 June by Atout France, alongside Bulgari Hotel Paris and Cheval Blanc Paris in the capital, the Martinez in Cannes, the Four Seasons in Megève, and the Royal Champagne, which gives Champagne its first Palace.

The Fouquet’s hotel keeps its own quiet address at 46 Avenue George V, around the corner from the Champs-Élysées brasserie of the same name, and was renovated in 2025; it becomes the second Palace in Groupe Barrière’s collection after Courchevel, and is bookable now. France counts 33 Palaces in all, 13 of them in Paris, on a list reviewed every three years, with the Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme and the Mandarin Oriental Paris reported to be among those losing the label this year.

The hotel had waited for the distinction since it opened in 2006, designed by Jacques Garcia and the architect Édouard François on a site the Barrière family had assembled around the brasserie they bought in 1998. Julien Gardin, the hotel’s general manager, has described the recognition as one granted not to a name or an address but to a measurable level of operational excellence, the result of two years of renovation work, most visibly a rebuilt lobby reimagined as a genuine living space in pure Art Deco style.

For Joy Desseigne-Barrière and Alexandre Barrière, who co-preside over the family business, the distinction carries a more personal weight: a step, they have said, toward realising a dream their mother Diane Barrière held for the address long before the hotel existed. The 101-room hotel’s location at the corner of Avenue George V, a few hundred metres from the Arc de Triomphe and surrounded by the other Palaces of the Golden Triangle, places it at the geographic and symbolic centre of Parisian luxury hospitality, with its 750-square-metre spa, an ice room, a pickleball court and a pool among the amenities that helped its case.

Beyond the brasserie’s red awnings, the hotel keeps its more private register a short walk away: Joy, a restaurant set around an interior garden and a wraparound library, built for a quieter lunch or a business meal away from the bustle of the avenue outside. It is this contrast, between the theatre of the Champs-Élysées-facing brasserie and the discretion of the rooms behind it, that distinguishes the address from its showier neighbours along the avenue.

Rooms at Fouquet’s Paris start from €1,400 a night. For Groupe Barrière, the distinction is the culmination of a long-term vision; for Paris, one more confirmation that the capital continues to set the global standard for hospitality at its most exceptional. Visit Fouquet’s Paris here.
