The most valuable investment a destination can make is not always another hotel. Increasingly, it is the infrastructure that allows people to experience a place more thoughtfully. Around Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake, a new cycling route is quietly reshaping one of Europe’s most established leisure destinations, placing movement, accessibility and landscape at the centre of the visitor experience.
The Ciclovia del Garda, known internationally as Garda by Bike, is a long-term project that will eventually connect approximately 140 kilometres of cycling paths around the lake. Combining existing routes with newly constructed sections and part of the EuroVelo 7 network, the project links the lake’s historic villages, waterfront promenades and mountain landscapes into a single continuous experience. While the full circuit remains under construction, several of its most celebrated sections are already open.
Among them is the now-iconic route between Limone sul Garda and Riva del Garda, where a cantilevered pathway extends from the cliffs above the water, allowing cyclists to travel suspended between the mountains and the lake. Elsewhere, newly completed sections pass through restored tunnels and former railway galleries, while the eastern shoreline has gained additional cycling infrastructure, rest areas and service stations designed to encourage slower, more immersive exploration.
Projects like Garda by Bike reflect a broader shift in destination development. Rather than relying solely on new hotels or attractions, many of Europe’s most established tourism regions are investing in experiences that encourage visitors to spend more time outdoors, engage more deeply with local landscapes and travel at a slower pace. Cycling infrastructure has become as much an investment in destination quality as it is in transport, supporting wellness, sustainability and longer visitor stays.
The project has not been without challenges. A technically complex 30-kilometre stretch between Limone sul Garda and Gardone Riviera remains unresolved due to engineering, environmental and conservation concerns, with ferry connections expected to bridge part of the route until a permanent solution is found. Even so, the completed sections already demonstrate the ambition of the wider vision and have quickly become among the lake’s most photographed experiences.
Completion of the full circuit is expected over the coming years. By then, Lake Garda may offer more than one of Europe’s most beautiful cycling routes. It will stand as an example of how thoughtful infrastructure can become a defining luxury in its own right, proving that the future of premium travel is shaped as much by how people move through a destination as by where they choose to stay.
